Bedroom Decorating Do’s and Don’ts

Learn the unwritten rules for designing and arranging your bedroom.

A well-balanced bedroom

We recently gave various tips on ways to spruce up your living room while avoiding a few design taboos, but what about bedrooms? Guests might frequent these rooms less, but it’s important to have your arrangements flow cohesively throughout your home. Bedrooms are also the places we go to rest and balance ourselves. To ensure your bedrooms are well-balanced, here are a few guidelines to consider when decorating them.

The Do’s

  • Do use multiple light sources with varying degrees of intensity.

  • Do install dimmer switches.

  • Do consider getting rid of the carpet. Carpet is going out of style and can easily get dirty.

  • Do choose calming colors for your bedroom.

  • Do choose a rug that appropriately fits your bed and the overall size of the room.

  • Do have one place to sit and relax.

  • Do consider a place to store everyday items so they don’t clutter the room.

  • Do make sure you choose the right mattress for you.

The Don’ts

  • Don’t have a bed that’s too big or too small for a room.

  • Don’t overcrowd the room with furniture.

  • Don’t overcrowd the walls with decorations—keep it simple.

  • Don’t use bold or bright colors in the bedroom. It’s a place to unwind and relax.

  • Don’t have too many distracting electronic devices (TVs, Computers, etc.).

  • Don’t get cheap blinds or curtains. Tacky curtains are an eyesore.

  • Don’t have white sheets if you have pets, especially cats.

  • Don’t overpay for quality bedroom furniture.
