The Do’s and Don’ts for Your Living Room

Learn the unwritten rules for designing and arranging your living room.

Your living room is most likely the first room your guests will see when entering your home and plays a vital role in establishing its overall design. Think of it as the first impression of your home. It’s also the room your family and guests typically spend the most time in. At Bel Furniture, a Houston furniture company, we take pride in offering quality furniture at an affordable price, but it’s up to you to ensure our pieces flow cohesively with your home’s other decor—-especially in the living room. To help guide you through this process, here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when arranging your living room.

The Do’s

  • Do buy your most expensive furnishing first and then match the rest of the room accordingly.
  • Do have a quality living room furnishings. You want your guests to feel comfortable and right at home.
  • Do use multiple light sources with diverse intensities.
  • Do use dimmer switches.
  • Do have your wall art hung at eye level.
  • Do use a select number of throw pillows to accentuate your other decor.

The Don’ts

  • Don’t use an excessive amount of throw pillows.
  • Don’t use an ill-fitted rug. Having a rug that’s too small or too big can create an eye sore.
  • Don’t have your furniture up against a wall. This can kill the flow of your room.
  • Don’t crowd your furniture together. Your guests should have plenty of space to walk between them.
  • Don’t use one bright light source.
  • Don’t use more than three patterns in one room.

  2. Don't buy from Bel furniture if you want quality furniture and good customer service. After having my furniture set for a few months, the leather began to wear away. I was told this is normal wear and tear and warranty won't cover it. This started after a few months of use. Also, everytime I call customer service I'm told I will receive a call back and never do. I have bought thousands of dollars worth of furniture from them over the years but have found that this company does NOT take care of their customers.
