What Height Bar Stool Should You Buy?

Bar Stool

Whether they hold your breakfast in the kitchen or wait patiently stocked in the basement for the next big game, bars have become a staple in many of our homes. Many of us get so caught up in the excitement of entertaining guests in this new and exciting way that we forget about one of the most important aspects of the bar — the bar stools. Bars come in all shapes and sizes, and the seating we buy has to reflect the unique quality of the particular piece. Careless bar stool purchases could lead to people either towering over the bar or barely able to see over the top of it! In order to help you avoid such an embarrassing fate, our team at Bel Furniture compiled a handy how-to guide when it comes to what height bar stool you should buy.

Finding The Correct Height

The first step to take in determining the correct height for your stools will be to accurately measure your bar. Using a tape measure, determine the height from the bottom of the floor to the counter of the bar. This is absolutely critical in determining the correct size stool to purchase, so you may want to do it more than twice. Even better if you have a friend or family member measure as well. To make things as simple as possible, a quick and easy premise to follow is to take the height of the counter and subtract 10 inches. This will be approximately the correct height. For a more accurate measurement and , follow this guide:
  • Table Stool
Regular table heights are usually between 28 and 30 inches, so you will want a chair that is between 16 and 23 inches.
  • Counter Stool
Slightly taller than your standard table, a counter bar usually measures between 35 and 39 inches, meaning that a stool between 24 and 27 inches will be ideal.
  • Bar Stool
The most common height for standard bars and what most people think of when they hear “bar counter,” is between 41 inches and 43 inches. In order to sit comfortably at this height, we recommend a bar stool between 28 and 33 inches.
  • Tall Bar Stool
Some bars stand taller than average, at between 44 and 47 inches. Prepare to purchase stools that are between 33 and 40 inches for these giants.
