Items To Aid With Moving Heavy Furniture

Buying new furniture in Houston can be more of a hassle than necessary if you don’t know how to properly move it. Particularly heavy pieces, like living room furniture, will put a serious strain on you and your helpers without proper devices to balance the weight. Here are some ideas of what to use to smooth along the process.

Moving Furniture By Pushing It

Sliders

One option you have for easily relocating your furniture from room to room is sliders. You can purchase these at hardware stores, such as Lowes or Home Depot, but you can also use frisbees or glossy magazines as alternatives. You simply place the sliders underneath the legs of the furniture, with the smooth edge against the floor, and then push it to where it needs to go. Make sure to push from a lower section to avoid tipping and bring in another person for assistance if you think it’s necessary. The friction will be reduced; thus, the object will slide with more ease.

Moving Blankets

Moving blankets work similarly, just make sure you put the entire blanket under the furniture before you pull it where the piece should go. You can also fold up a bunch of moving blankets to form a kind of ramp to move furniture upstairs. Just place a blanket on each step, in addition to the one under the furniture, and pull the edge to bring the piece upstairs.

Shoulder Dolly

Another option is using a shoulder dolly. This has straps which lift by connecting to your shoulders to remove the weight from your back. This, in turn, makes you use your strong muscle groups and provides more leverage. However, don’t use this for moving on stairs, just flat surfaces. On stairs, the weight shifts nearly entirely to the bottom person.

Moving Furniture With Equipment Using Wheels

Moving Dolly

A moving dolly, a square platform with four wheels, is another option for transporting your furniture. They are simple to use because you just put the furniture on top and then push it in any direction. Keep in mind that they are small and you may require something larger for your job.

Hand Truck

A hand truck, however, is a metal, upright standing piece of equipment with wheels on the bottom, often used for dressers, tables, and bookcases. You wheel the platform underneath the furniture and then push it by the handles. In order to do this, lean the furniture against it and tilt the handle toward you.
