Labor Day: What does it mean to you?

What does Labor Day mean to you? Maybe you see it as a fun and relaxing day off work or a time to barbeque and gather with family. These leisure time activities certainly are valid, because it’s important to unwind, but perhaps many times we focus more on the benefits of Labor Day rather than the reasons why we celebrate Labor Day in the first place. With the end of our Labor Day Sale just one week away, Bel Furniture would like to take time to reflect on the special contributions made by laborers across the country as well as the overall significance of this special day.

You work hard. You know this, and we know this. It’s nothing new either, because Americans have been hard workers since the very beginning. It’s how we became such a strong and prosperous country; we are a part of a multi-generational effort to push things to the next level—and that’s no easy task! This is why on the first Monday of every September; the United States of America celebrates the hard work and efforts of YOU! But how did this holiday come about?

Beginning as early as 1882, political figures proposed that the hard labor of Americans should be recognized with a national holiday, and indeed throughout the 19th Century several states began celebrating it on their own, starting with Oregon in 1887. Although, the United States Congress did not rush legislation for the holiday on a Federal level until the Pullman Strike of 1894. The Pullman Strike was a nationwide railroad strike that was first organized in Pullman, Chicago. During the depression of 1893, the Pullman Palace Car Company felt they needed to cut worker wages while still maintaining their regular housing rent. The workers were outraged and organized a strike on a massive scale. Under the order of President Grover Cleveland, the U.S. Marshals and military rushed in to contain the strike which resulted in the unfortunate deaths of several workers. After this significant event, legislation was pushed, and President Cleveland signed this monumental day into law as an official national holiday. The holiday is meant to bring attention to American laborers and the contributions they make to this country’s prosperity and fortitude.
