At Bel Furniture, we understand that buying furniture is an investment, and any investment is worth protecting. To help ensure that your special purchase lasts as long as possible, here are some tips for cleaning and protecting your furniture.
Wood Furniture
Depending on the type of finish on your furniture, cleaning techniques can vary. For most wood furniture, cleaning with a lot of water is a big mistake. Due to its porous nature, it is unadvisable to clean wood with an excessive amount of water.
For painted wood, cleaning with a damp rag is fine, however for some wood finishes, any amount of water can be damaging, For lacquered, oiled, or finished wood, it's best to use a dry dusting technique; a simple microfiber cloth with a wood oil cleaning product.
Upholstery Furniture
Fabric furniture, although beautiful, can be a pain to keep clean, especially in a house with pets and children. For preventative measures, it is best to use a cleaning product that repels stains and be sure to test the product on a small part of the fabric first to ensure it won't discolor the fabric. For basic spot cleaning, an easy solution of hot water and dish soap applied liberally and scrubbed with a microfiber cloth may be all you need.
For more stubborn stains, spray hydrogen peroxide (vodka and vinegar also work well—don’t worry, the smell goes away when dry!) on the stain and let sit for 10-15 minutes and then steam clean until the stain disappears. If you’re still uncertain about how to go about cleaning a particular stain, consult a professional cleaning service.
